K&N B047C6 vs RE-0950: The Fleet Buyer's Air Filter Comparison

I manage purchasing for a 40-person company based near Utrecht—office supplies, vehicle parts, maintenance contracts, you name it. That includes keeping 15 company vehicles on the road. The B047C6 wins this round without drama. It's a no-brainer for stock vehicles. On our 2019 cargo van, the mechanic finished in about 15 minutes—open the intake housing, swap the filter, close it up. No measuring, no extra parts, no surprises. For a busy workshop, that predictability has real value.

The RE-0950 is not as simple. Because it's a universal filter, you need to match it to your intake pipe diameter. We have one van with a custom intake, and getting the flange sizing right took a couple of calls with our supplier. Not difficult, but it required coordination. If your team isn't comfortable with custom setups, that friction shows up fast.

There's a long-standing assumption that universal clamp-on filters always flow better because they're bigger and free from the factory airbox restrictions. For our modified van, that's definitely true—the RE-0950 gives that setup the breathing room it needs.

But here's what I didn't expect: on a stock vehicle, the B047C6 performs nearly as well as the RE-0950 does on a modified one. Because it's engineered around the factory intake dimensions, it makes the most of the stock airflow path. In real-world driving on otherwise stock engines, we couldn't feel a significant difference.

By the way, when a vendor makes wild horsepower claims about either filter, I'm skeptical. Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), performance claims have to be substantiated, and I've come across plenty of listings that overstate what a filter alone can do. Dimension 3: Maintenance and Real Cost Over Time

Here's the dimension that flipped my expectations. I assumed the drop-in B047C6 would be simpler to maintain. It's not. Because the RE-0950 sits exposed in the engine bay, servicing it is quicker: loosen one clamp, pull the filter, wash it, dry it, re-oil it, reinstall. Five minutes, done.

The B047C6 requires opening the factory intake housing first, removing the filter, and then reversing the process. That's maybe ten minutes instead of five. Small difference, but when your workshop services 15 vehicles, it adds up over the year.

Both filters are washable and reusable. Switching from throwaway filters to washable ones was one of the changes that made the biggest dent in our 2024 budget review. For our fleet, the majority of vehicles run the B047C6. The modified van uses the RE-0950, and it's the right choice for that build. There's no universal winner here—just different tools for different setups.
